History:

Thomas Patrick Kelly was born on March 17, 1973 in Youghal, Co. Cork, Ireland. His parents left him at an orphanage run by Irish Catholic clergy when he was only 10 months old, however, he was in good hands as the monks and nuns, who hailed from other Irish counties, America, Germany and Italy schooled Thomas in world, Irish and American history, mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics, Latin, Greek, Irish-Gaelic, English and other languages


During his time in the orphanage, Tom would start to display skills and qualities that would lead him to serve in the British army and as a police officer. These included mountaineering, a love of the outdoors, practicing martial arts, teamwork and powers of observation. When he turned 18, Tom left the orphanage and entered the British Army. As a devout Irish-Catholic, he entered the Royal Irish Regiment after boot camp where he would qualify as a piper and machine gunner. During this time, his skills in first aid, medicine, and hand to hand combat would be further enhanced. After spending time as a Lance Corporal, Tom entered the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst. After completing the Commissioning Course, he was made Second Lieutenant of the RIR, towards the end of his stint with the Royal Irish Regiment; he joined the British Special Air Service. After training, he entered his first assignment as part of a mountain troop (squad) in the 22nd SAS, where he was a weapons and martial arts expert and team medic.

Upon his discharge from the army, Tom joined the Garda Síochána. After the academy, he worked street patrol his first few years and then transferred to the Garda’s CSI department, being promoted to Detective 2nd Grade faster than anyone. While working as a CSI for the Garda, Thomas was giving a presentation on burn analysis at the International CSI conference in Dublin. It was after that presentation that he was approached by Det. Mac Taylor, head of the New York Crime Lab. Over the course of the conference, Mac and Tom formed a friendship mainly due to their shared military background. At the end of the conference, Mac informed Tom that he had selected Tom for the overseas CSI exchange

Tom’s personality is a cross between Dirty Harry and Sherlock Holmes. Although he is calm and level headed around his teammates, Tom has no qualms about unleashing his temper on those who deserve it, (ie suspects, those who harm children, etc.) Like Holmes, he his able to pick up on and notice things during a case that other people miss or don't think about. His faith is what keeps him in check and helps him deal with the horrors of his job, however, like his fellow Irishmen, he is superstitious. Like Det. Taylor, he is utterly devoted to protecting the safety of New York City, mainly due to the fact that it is home to a significant Irish population. Outside of his duties as a CSI, Thomas is a member of the NYPD Pipes and Drums as a piper, and from time to time, he joins the rest of the team for a drink after hours.

During his first days in New York, Tom met Detective 2nd Grade Shannon Wallace as she was dropping off evidence for him. The two formed a relationship due to their shared faith of Roman Catholicism and Irish heritage. After dating for a year, Tom and Shannon took vacation time and go to Dublin. While touring Dublin Castle, Tom proposed to Shannon. In the months after their wedding, Shannon gave birth to their daughter Sara Anne Kelly, fraternal twins Colleen Nicole Kelly and Erin Lynn Kelly. Shannon has recently given birth to her and Tom’s fourth daughter Bridget Caitlín Kelly.
