Not an Accident [Thomas, Don]

11 years ago in Berlin:
A young woman, about 21 years old is in a hospital, giving birth to a girl, she names Lilyana. The baby girl is taken away from her to stay with her dad and she graduated from university and went back to New York to live her life, with her family and old friends.

About 2 pm at the Crime Lab:
A young girl, about 10 years old stepped out of the elevator. She had long blond curls and beautiful, clever looking brown eyes. She wore a school uniform from the same school that Thomas and Shannon's girls went to and had her backpack on one shoulder. She looked around and started walking around the lab, the visitor tag bouncing from her collar.
The first room she saw someone in, was the break room and so she went over and knocked on the glass door. Hey brown eyes looking curiously at the dark haired man, standing at the counter with a cup in his hands. She didn't know that the man was close to the person she was looking for, but she hoped that he could help her.

"Hello." she said a little shyly.

Thomas looked at the young girl when she spoke to him, "Hello" he replied to the girl, he recognized the school uniform, "You looking for someone lass?" Thomas asked, his Irish accent noticable

The girl nodded at his question and then walked into the room.
"I'm looking for Ms. Becall. Two girls in my class said she's working here." she replied still a little uncertain.

Thomas nodded, wondering how the girl knew Haylen, "Follow me, I'll take you to her." he replied

The girl nodded. As she followed Thomas through the hallway her hand curled around the strap of her backpack and it was obvious that she was nervous.
"Do you know her well?" the girl asked curiously.


I was in my office right now, writing on a report for a case that was closed.

"Yes I do" Thomas replied, "We are good friends" he added as they walked to her office

The girl nodded, getting curious now.
"What is she like?" she asked Thomas.

"She's smart, very talented and a quick thinker" Thomas replied

"Sounds like you like her..." Lilyana started and then stopped, blushing. "Sorry." she offered quickly.

Thomas looked at her, "Your forgiven" he said to her gently as they reached Haylen's office

Seeing Thomas walking up to my office with a young girl I stood up and walked up to them.

Lilyana looked at Thomas with a small smile. "Thank you, Mr."

"Your welcome lass" Thomas replied, he then looked at Haylen, "This little girl was looking for you." he said to her

I nodded at Thomas and then looked at the girl. She looked just my close friend Lily, who died 5 years ago. For a moment I wasn't really able to say something.
"Hello." I said with a small smile as I shook her hand.
"Sorry, if I'm interrupting but... I was hoping you could help me." the girl said, looking at me and then at Thomas, before she looked back at me.
"I'll see what I can do." I said.
"Oh... and I'm Lilyana Hermann, I forgot."

Thomas watched Haylen, then looked at the girl, "Hello Lilyana" he replied

"Hello." she replied and then looked at me.
"You can call me Haylen." I said to her and she smiled.
"Do you know Lily McGee?" Lilyana asked me and all I could do was merely nod, my face saddening a little.

Thomas saw Haylen's face change, "Haylen, what is it?" he asked

"She was my best friend." I said to Thomas and then looked at Lilyana.
"You are her daughter, am I right?" I asked her what I was guessing, now and she nodded. I looked at her and then at Thomas. "She died almost 5 years ago." I added quietly.

Thomas nodded in reply when Haylen told him that

Lilyana seemed to know that Lily died.
"You know, we moved to America just about three years ago... My dad told me she came from New York and I tried to find her, but was told she died." she said looking at us. "I found my brith certificate and other important stuff along with this." she pulled out an quite informal certificate that announced me to be her godmother. I looked up, my eyes gently watering.

Thomas walked over and stood next to Haylen as she read the paper

"I didn't even know that Lily had a daughter. She never told me." I said, after I read the paper. Lilyana looked at me with a sad face.
"You are the only one that could help me." she said. "I ran from my dad."

Thomas looked at Lilyana, "Did he hurt you?" he asked, concern in his voice

Lilyana looked at Thomas and shook her head.
"No. But he's a bad man." she said.

"What does he do?" Thomas asked, sitting in a chair and looking at her

"I don't really know." Lilyana said a little uncertain. "I was home when he met a few guys with guns and stuff and they were talking about some kind of 'business' they made. I think he's selling guns in Germany." she said. For a ten year old she was quite observant.
